Like to learn Mandarin and meet others with a similar interest. I work at a place where broadcasts are done in Mandarin, Cantonese and other asian languages, and want to learn. This group seems open to beginners.
I like it all but am interested in learning the differences between what has been Americanized, along the lines of this article: http://www.flavorandfortune.com/dataaccess/article.php?ID=77
A few words.
Basic conversation, book/learning material help such as maybe finding texts that are used to teach in China, and also interested in writing /caligraphy.

I grew up around DC. Just started learning with some audio (Pimsluer initially), and books/dictionaries, but realize I need to interact with other people to really learn. Even though I work with Chinese people there really isn't time there.
