UCSD offers Chinese language classes through the extension that anyone can take. These are University level courses with homework, tests, etc. They are not for the casual learner, but you can choose the "No Grade" option if you wish.

After taking just the level 1 class you will feel comfortable in small groups, etc. if you have done all the homework . You will be able to inquire what people like do do, discuss going to restaurants, talk about family, etc.
