Introduction

I just moved to San Diego last week. I lived for 3 years in Shenyang, Liaoning from '96-'99. I have M.A. in Chinese History. Language skills have eroded because not much opportunity to use Mandarin where I was living, in Rhode Island.

Are you a native Chinese speaker?

No.

Which part(s) of Chinese culture is your favorite?

I really enjoy the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I find Chinese history and different philosophies to be fascinating. I love the language itself and studied both the traditional and simplified characters back in the late 1990s. I also love the foods that I ate while I was there.

Are you using your Chinese for work/school/leasure purpose today?

No, but it came in handy in some of my courses while studying for my MA in history.

How long have you lived/worked/studied Chinese in a Chinese speaking country?

three full years. july 96 to july 99 in Shenyang

How long have you studied Chinese in US?

I have never studied Chinese in the U.S. All of my Chinese was learned in Shenyang from 1996 to 1999. Within that time frame, one year of formal study, and the rest was self-study. Since then, self-study reading, practicing writing, and watching dubbed movies.
