Hi. I've studied Chinese in college and have taken several trips to Chinese-speaking countries, but I still don't speak well at all. Some day I hope to live for a while where I'll have to use Chinese on a daily basis.
No. Unfortunately, my mom never spoke Chinese to me when I was growing up.
I love the active street life and the openness of the Chinese people.
Only when I travel to China, or to some other country where I don't speak the language. For example, when I was in Hungary, it was nice to be able to walk into Chinese restaurants and be able to order in Chinese (since I can't speak Hungarian).
I've been to Taiwan 3 times and China 5 times. Most recently, I spent 3 months in Southwestern China in 2002, and a week in Shanghai in 2004.
I took some night classes at UCLA, and then I took four quarters of day classes there.
